Dendrochronology has achieved great progress as an interdisciplinary science and has been extensively applied, especially in the fields of dendroclimatology and dendroecology. Dendroecology is based on the fundamental principles and methods of dendrochronology and has borrowed many ideas from wood anatomy, ecology, and environmental sciences. The dendrochronology has also been widely applied for the study of global change, mountain science, ecosystem dynamics under changing climate conditions and human activities, forest ecology, and forest management. Unfortunately, dendroecological study in China is still in the primary stage. Chinese tree-ring scientists have not yet paid enough attention to the spe- cific types of dendroecological research, and in most cases they have only carried out the corresponding dendroecological analyses when they reconstructed the past climate. In order to develop the science of dendroecology in China, Chinese scientists should look for more international cooperations and more international exchange. Additionally, the public is currently greatly concerning the global change, which is considered as one of the greatest challenges in geosciences. Dendroecological studies should embrace and involve such an important field of research so that Chinese scientists can play a more important role in understanding the global change.
