Research Progress on the Role of Mitophagy in Viral Infection
Mitophagy is a form of"selective autophagy".It involves sending damaged or excess mitochondria to lysosomes for degradation.Mitophagy plays a critical part in controlling the quantity and maintaining the quality of mitochondria.Mitophagy is also involved in innate immunity, apoptosis, and inflammation.Accumulating evidence suggests that various viruses manipulate mitophagy to achieve"immune escape"and persistent infection. In this review,we focus on the molecular mechanism of mitophagy, regulation of mitophagy by viruses, and on how viruses utilize host mitophagy. In this way,we provide new insights for understanding the pathogenic mechanism of viruses and antiviral strategies.
