Gombrich's Exploration of the Psychological Reasons for the Generation Mechanism of Caricatures
In Europe, caricature has been considered as an inferior art form for quite a long time. Gombrich, contrary to the historical prejudice against the art of caricature, uses the method of iconography to deeply analyze the historical generation mecha-nism of caricature, especially the portrait of caricature, as well as its deep-rooted psychological reasons. He used the iconographic methods such as"appearance constancy"and"image equivalence"to reveal the mystery of human perception, image psychology and the evolution reasons of cartoon psychology. His purpose is not to elaborate on the"history of European comics", but to unravel the mechanism of the creation of the portrait caricature and its important historical position and existence significance .
