"Nearby"History:Mirror Image of Late Qing Dynasty in The Diary of He Zhaoying
The extant diary of He Zhaoying,a celebrity in the late Qing Dynasty, keeps a record of several important stages in his life.Especially after living in the capital for 50 years,He Zhaoying went to Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces as the Salt Com-missioner of Hangjiahu Road in Zhejiang province and Guangdong and Guangxi provinces respectively. As a personal participant in related affairs,he was deeply exposed to the imperial examination system, seawalls and salt affairs, which were vital to the country. The"nearby"(Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces)he wrote about in his diary was a"distant place"that ordinary people and most officials had not experienced. It is closely related to the forefront of the national situation at that time.Like a mirror,it reflected a unique image of late Qing Dynasty.
