The Duality of Situation:Identity Construction and Alienation in Digital Audio-Visual Culture
The development of digital audio-visual media and culture creates new situations and promotes new media practices for users. However,it also brings new problems and phenomena, such as the shift in the logic of situation generation towards streaming media users, the displacement of situation functions as communication tools, and the orientation of power re-structuring in the process of de-publicization of situation order. Therefore, there exists the duality of situation for user identity construction. One the one hand streaming media users build identities based on situation, and the identity construction process further stimulates the creation of situation;on the other hand, these constructed identities exhibit a trend of going beyond situation, causing alienation between identity and identity recognition. This article clarifies the characteristics of new situations in digital audio-visual culture, expounds the situation interaction of streaming media users based on identity, and analyzes the causes and crises of identity alienation.Furthermore, this article attempts to extend from the linear model of new media-new situation-new behavior to a more explanatory user-led cyclical model, and proposes to promote the development of digital audio-visual culture through the coalescence of consensus, the regaining of publicness and the rebuilding of community.
