Digital Care or Media Control?Digital Divide in Smartphone Use from the Perspective of the Elderly
This article takes three levels of the digital divide theory as the analytical framework to try to understand the elderly's perception of digital device access, use and effect.Through family interviews,it found that in terms of smart phone access, the diffuse"marginal atmosphere"in the society presupposes the lower demand of the elderly for new technologies. When using their smart phones, young people transferred the"always online atmosphere"to the elderly based on inter-generational relations, thus affecting their media use.And the actual media use effect of the elderly is dynamic and changing constantly, which is related to social responsibility, gender relations and other factors. The research believes that the society has hidden the control of the use of media for the elderly in a seemingly caring way, which means the elderly themselves are trapped in the needs of family resources and family affection, and constantly transfer their power. The society needs to put the elderly back to the social center from the edge of the digital society,so that the silver digital divide can be truly bridged.
