Estimation and classification of vegetation cover using Google Earth Engine cloud platform
The spatiotemporal characteristics of vegetation changes can indirectly reflect the changes in the quality of the ecological environment, which is of great significance to the stability of the ecosystem, species diversity, and socio-economic development of a region. This paper first established the normalized different vegetation index (NDVI), the fraction of vegetation cover (FVC), and other indicators by the Google Earth Engine cloud platform. Then it used these indicators to estimate and classify the vegetation coverage of Zhejiang Province from 2011 to 2021. The results show that the total vegetation coverage in Zhejiang Province remains basically unchanged, with an average vegetation coverage of 104233.87 km2. The vegetation cover is dominated by high FVC, with an average coverage accounting for 81.0% of the total coverage. In 2021, the vegetation coverage of high FVC and relatively high FVC accounted for 82.90% and 9.39%, respectively, while that of low FVC and relatively low FVC accounted for 0.63% and 1.59%, respectively. The analysis of the spatial-temporal characteristics of vegetation coverage reveals the spatial scale dependence of FVC change in Zhejiang Province. Meanwhile, the results can provide a scientific basis and decision support for ecological monitoring, environmental protection, and high-quality regional development in Zhejiang Province.
