Urban image is important for promoting the healthy development of the city,so it is necessary to incorporate the research on urban images with public participation.By incorporating public emotions into the urban image perception research framework, this article utilized sentiment classification methods based on bidirectional encoder representations from transformers-whole word mask(BERT-WWM),sentiment index, and semantic analysis models to analyze original check-in Weibo posts in Shanghai and explore the urban image perception of Shanghai. The result illustrates that:① According to the analysis of urban image perception based on emotions, the overall urban image of Shanghai is positive, and citizens are more likely to have different urban image perceptions in urban commerce, culture and tourism, and active life areas.② According to the analysis of urban image perception based on cognition, the main sources of the positive cognitive image of Shanghai are the culture and tourism;the main sources of the negative cognitive image of Shanghai are the weather, traffic, and life pressure.Unconventional hot events will receive large-scale attention in a short period of time, thus affecting the urban cognitive image within this period of time. The urban image perception analysis of Shanghai based on public emotions can not only provide a better understanding of citizens'genuine expressions of satisfaction, happiness, and security regarding their location at a certain time but also help to offer reasonable references for long-term urban planning and governance in the future.
