In the consumer society of the late Ming Dynasty, the elite class, when faced with the pressure from the imitation by merchants and commoners, tended to differentiate between the elegance and the vulgarity by shaping consumer taste. However, they had another way of"inventing taste",that is,using their possessions as resources to transform consumption into creation. The two generations of owners of Hanshan Villa(寒山别业)in Suzhou,a prestigious secluded garden, created new books based on the aesthetic luxuries they possessed(such as the original inscription stones of famous calligraphy models, rare Song-edition books, and rare books of materia medica from the imperial palace)to serve multiple purposes. These"recreated books"not only boast the cultural status of the"owner"of ancient books to the world, but also show their artistic taste as"creators".The practice of creating books by the owners of Hanshan Villa can help us to re-understand what"creation"is-it can not necessarily be"bringing forth something from nothing",but can possibly be"bringing forth the new from the old".
