The Writing Model of Epitaphs and its Evolution in Luzhou in the Tang Dynasty——On the Errors as Historical Materials for the Immigration History
A large number of epitaphs of the Tang Dynasty were unearthed in Luzhou(潞州),mostly related to the middle and lower classes of society.In many of the epitaphs,the stele erectors claimed that"their ancestor moved from his native place to take office in this area"or"their ancestor was Prefect of so-and-so shire+so-and-so Marquis".As this was a kind of writing model,the epitaphs were mostly put together according to the texts of the"written ritual"(书仪式).As these epitaphs have obvious regional characteristics,they cannot be considered as historical materials for the immigration history.The writing model of the epitaphs and the form of their cover also changed with time passing by,and the writing model of epitaphs in Luzhou(潞州)during the late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties gradually became consistent with that of the whole country.After the Miao's clan of Shangdang(上党苗氏)moved to Luoyang(洛阳),they gave up the simple writing model of epitaphs they had used in Luzhou,and completed the literatization of their ancestors'narratives,in the form of"Prefect of Shangdang+so-and-so Marquis"still appearing from time to time in their family's memories.
