From Confucian Classics and History to Essays and Novels:The Evolution of the Ideas on the Study of Zuozhuan
The position of Zuozhuan(《左传》)in the system of the traditional Confucian classics has constantly been challenged.Since the Song Dynasty,Zuozhuan has been regarded as a collection of essays.Various anthologies of selected ancient essays and various selected and commentary works on Zuozhuan,elaborated Zuozhuan from the perspectives of ancient essays and eight-part essays focusing on the analysis of its essays and the discussion of their arguments.Zuozhuan was even commented from the perspective of a novel.With its narratives of fantasies and illusions being affirmed,and its narrative characteristics being revealed,it was incorporated in the system of literature and given a reasonable explanation.This indicates that the change of the ideas on literature from the past to the present,has promoted the ideas on the study of Zuozhuan to shift from Confucian classics and history to ancient essays and then to literature.Based on the idea of literature in a broader sense,the enlightening significance of Zuozhuan for today's essay writing is to be further explored.
