On Jiang Yan's Imitation and Acceptance of Zuo Si's Poems on History
Historically,scholars have generally held Jiang Yan's(江淹)Thirty Miscellaneous-style Poems(《杂体诗三十首》)in high regard,but they have been less in favor of his Zuo Si's Poems on History(《左记室思咏史》),an imitation of Zuo Si's(左思)Eight Sections of Poems on History(《咏史》八首).On the basis of the study of his former sages,we can reinterpret this imitated poem written by Jiang Yan from the perspectives of the intensive reading of its text,the intertextuality and the history of its acceptance,so as to examine the similarities and dissimilarities between Jiang Yan's imitated poem and Zuo Si's Eight Sections of Poems on History.By doing so,this article challenges the previous argument that Jiang's imitated poem was inferior to Zuo's original poems in writing skill.Instead,this article holds that Jiang's imitation grasped the spiritual core of Zuo's poems in terms of way of expression,subject,and idea.Additionally,the intertextual analysis of Jiang's imitated poems and the original poems he imitated can elucidate the relationship between Jiang Yan's imitated poems and their concerned poems on history from the Six Dynasties(六朝).This further highlights the significance of Jiang's imitated poems in the circulation and acceptance of Zuo's Poems on History.As a result,this article offers a fresh perspective and thinking dimension for the study of Jiang's imitated poems.
