A Study on Wang Guowei's Seven Years'Means of Livelihood in Shanghai(1916-1923)
Wang Guowei(王国维)devoted himself to academics all his life, but he was unable to attend to himself,so he lived a hard life and was even trapped in financial difficulty. In early 1916,Wang Guowei returned to Shanghai from Kyoto,Japan. In May 1923,he went to Beiping(北平)as Special Aide Serving the Emperor in South Study(南书房行走),responding to the call of Puyi(溥仪).From 1916 to 1923,Wang Guowei established his important academic position in Shanghai, and also expanded his academic influence, while his financial pressure greatly increased. In the seven years,he took charge of the editing of the Academic Series of Philological Scholarship(《广仓学宭学术丛编》),acted as Professor of Confucian Classics at St.Ching's College,Shanghai(仓圣明智大学),compiled Bibliography of the Collection of Miyun Building(《密韵楼藏书目》),co-compiled General Annals of Zhejiang(《浙江通史》),and also served as a correspondence tutor of Peking University. From all of these things he did,he obtained a certain amount of remuneration to meet the needs of his daily life.He chose his career on the basis of the principle that it would be beneficial to both his academics and his livelihood, and endeavored to earn a living in the academic space, without losing the dignity of academics, while providing the foundation for a minimum livelihood security.Focusing on Wang Guowei's means of livelihood in this period is also to focus on his path to academic development from another angle.
