Traditionally,it was believed that legal source referred to legal manifestation. However,as this understanding could not provide legal source with new factors apart from legal manifestation, ultimately it would lead to the dilemma of conceptual redundancy, emptiness of contents, and lack of practical significance.According to the current mainstream view, therefore, legal source refers to the total amount of bases of judgment, rather than legal manifestation. But it is difficult for this seemingly valid claim to avoid the statement that the basis of judgment is confined to the manifestation, and more importantly,it must also admit the erroneous claim that"the judgment is law".So,the best understanding of legal source is that it is the legal manifestation as it ought to be,rather than the legal manifestation as it is,and this will also lead to the source proposition about the nature of law,i.e.,legal existence and legal contents can only be identified by reference to social facts.
