The Confucian Classics Origin and Political Implications of Liu Yuxi's Bamboo Branch Lyrics
The scholars of the Mid-Tang Dynasty mainly had two methods to create Bamboo Branch Lyrics. One was the method of the other's narrative by Bai Juyi(白居易)and so on,and the other was Liu Yuxi's(刘禹锡)way of imitating the singing of local people in the first person.Liu Yuxi broke through the New Yuefu(乐府)tradition in his Nine Bamboo Branch Lyrics(《竹枝词九首》).Its thought was originated from the ancient meaning of collecting poems in The Gongyang Commentary on Spring and Autumn Annals《公羊传》),and it was a sublation and transcendence of the"messenger"tradition of collecting poems.Liu Yuxi advocated the use of the Gongyang Commentary to study ancient meanings, which were closely related to the new study of Spring and Autumn Annals in the Mid-Tang Dynasty. This was the practice of his Confucian classics ideology in Yuefu poetics. From the perspective of"sending messages to the emperor"(上达天听),Liu Yuxi's act of creation contained his thinking on the authenticity of the messages about the bottom society and reflected his political idea of eliminating the falsehood and seeking the truth, which was due to the influence of the general practice of Jiangnan(江南)made upon him in his early years and the working experience gained by him when he took office in Jiangnan later.Through the case of Liu Yuxi's Bamboo Branch lyrics,we can further understand and know about the intricate linkage relationship between academic thought, political idea and poetics practice in the Mid-Tang Dynasty, and provide a new method and a new path for the study of Confucian classics and literature.
