Cultural Self-awareness and Cultural Compromise under the Concept of Fusion between Chinese and Western Cultures——The Cultural Interpretation of "Translating China" by Chen Jitong,Gu Hongming, and Lin Yutang
Chen Jitong,Gu Hongming, and Lin Yutang demonstrated a strong cultural self-awareness in their cross-cultural communication practice of " Translating China". This was specifically manifested in their problem-oriented awareness of the conflict between Chinese and Western cultures, their consciousness of readers' acceptance of the target language context, and their awareness of the integration of core values in discourse. They traversed Chinese and Western cultures, selecting cultural elements that best represent traditional Chinese values and are compatible with Western humanistic spirit. Through creating and translating literary works that contain Chinese characteristics, they aimed to bridge the gap between China and the West, enhance the image of Chinese culture, and realize the cultural ideal of fusion between the East and the West. Meanwhile, their cultural communication practice of "Translating China" involved using the Western discourse system to interpret China,in order to bridge the gap between the self-image of national culture and the image perceived by others, which constituted a cultural compromise with the dominant norms of the target language system, resulting in a disconnect and mismatch between the idealized image of Chinese culture derived from the Western modern context and the reality of China.
