Chinese Language Education,Identity Recognition, and Cultural Maintenance of Overseas Chinese University Students in Canada
Chinese is the treasure of Chinese culture.Chinese language education enables overseas Chinese descendants to connect with their cultural identity and sense of belonging, serving as the foundation for inheriting and promoting traditional Chinese culture. This research takes the Chinese learning experiences of overseas Chinese students in a Canadian university as an example.Based on rhizome theory, our study delves deeply into these students'Chinese language learning experiences and how this process can shape their identity recognition and cultural maintenance. Our research shows that Chinese language learning presents characteristics of fluidity, convertibility, and non-linearity,which manifest as continuous complex interactions in orderly space and time. This rhizomatic development reflects the learners'sense of mission for promoting Chinese cultural maintenance. This sense of mission is not just a superficial ethnic identity or surname but is a sustainable and continuously extending cultural maintenance and cultural confidence. Moreover, family environment and the establishment of specialized courses play a pivotal role in Chinese language learning, identity formation, and cultural maintenance of the new generation of overseas Chinese university students in Canada.
