Reconsidering the Influence of Media on Learning from the Media Debate
The advancement of media technology has provided diversified means for teaching, and also triggered academic debate among educational scholars on whether/how learning and media are related.Strong media theorists argue that media technology can influence students'cognitive processing and improve learning benefits, while the weak media theorists argue that media technology cannot enhance learning benefits and may only yield economic benefits.Further research indicates that media technology does not bring about learning benefits or economic gains but rather triggers a transformation in learning paradigms. The current era is undergoing a transition where the dominant media is shifting from electronic technology to information technology.Information technology is gradually shaping a new learning paradigm distinct from tradition, and the development of artificial intelligence will further clarify the new learning paradigm shaped by information technology.During the transition of media, educational researchers need to be wary of the interference of"rearview mirror thinking"and employ forward-thinking to guide the transformation of learning paradigms led by new media technology.
