The Mechanism and Path of the Integration of Academic Education and Technical Education in British High Schools
High school education serves as a crucial link between compulsory education and higher education,a pivotal component in supporting high-quality educational development. In October 2023,the UK government unveiled a significant reform plan for high school education, dismantling the structural barriers between academic and vocational education, which traditionally operated on separate tracks. The goal of the "integration" reform in UK high school education is to ensure parity between technical and academic education, embed robust core knowledge, guarantee a broader curriculum for every student, and increase the quantity of high-quality instructional time. The reform is implemented through three main pathways:restructuring the high school education system, implementing new standards for advanced high school education, and establishing supporting measures for reform. The new standard for a "single-track" system in UK high school education ensures that students aged 16-19 can freely select a combination of subjects from a broader range of academic and technical courses, with equal respect for technical and academic education. It maintains a balance in the breadth and depth of knowledge learning, provides more high-quality course hours, enhances core knowledge, and improves key skills and employability, thus offering high school graduates a simple yet flexible path to choose from.
