A CASE STUDY ON CLIMATIC DATA CHOICE IN THE STUDY OF CORRELATION BETWEEN PINUS TABULAEFORMIS TREE-RING WIDTHS AND CLIMATIC FACTORS ON HELAN MOUNTAINS
An alpine meteorological station (Helan mountain station)and a submontane meteorological station (Azuoqi station)are present in Helan mountains. This work will study whether data from the submontane meteorological station could replace data from the alpine meteorological station.Tree core samples of Pinus tabulaeformis were taken near Helan mountain station and three types of tree-ring chronologies were developed.Standard chronology was used to study correlation between tree-ring and two climatic parameters (mean monthly temperature and total monthly precipitation of Helan mountain station and Azuoqi station). It was found that correlation between chronology and mean monthly temperature of the two stations were similar, while correlation between chronology and total monthly precipitation of the two stations were discrepant. Therefore in tree ring-climate studies, mean monthly temperature data of submontane stations can replace the alpine stations, while total monthly precipitation data cannot.
