Rational agents rely on their intentions to control their own behavior.Intention has two faces, which are linked to intention action and coordinating planning.Intention has complex of functional roles and associated norms, which constitute the special commitment characteristic of intention. There are two dimensions of commitment:volitional and reasoning-centered.The descriptive aspect of the volitional dimension of commitment consists in the characteristic role of present-directed intention in controlling present conduct. The normative aspect of commitment consists in the norms and standards of rationality associated with these roles. This commitment is tied both to the role of present-directed intention in controlling present action and to the roles of future-directed intention in the interim between intention-acquisition and intention-execution.
