Based on provincial-level panel data in China,a bilateral random frontier model is employed to quantitatively identify the driving role of rural e-commerce in the integration of urban and rural markets. The results indicate that the integration effect of rural e-commerce on urban and rural markets accounts for 69.2%,while the segmentation effect accounts for 30.8%,with a net effect of 38.4%.Spatiotemporal differential analysis reveals an overall trend of narrowing net effects of rural e-commerce on the integration of urban and rural markets, with a more pronounced impact in the southern coastal, southwestern, and northwestern regions.Nonlinear analysis suggests that in regions with lower levels of development in rural e-commerce and the integration of urban and rural markets, the impact of rural e-commerce on market integration is more significant.Further analysis reveals that rural e-commerce can promote the integration of urban and rural markets by improving transportation efficiency and optimizing the business environment, while also exacerbating market segmentation through the reinforcement of uneven distribution of talents and capital mobility imbalances. We should persist in improving the institutional design and development planning of rural e-commerce,and strive to build a systematic and complete modern rural e-commerce system.
