Exploration and practice of adopting case method teaching in the finite element analysis curriculum
Objective The curriculum related to the finite element method (FEM) emphasizes both theory and practice to improve students' abilities of practical skills and solving problems. As foundations in mathematics and physics were not good for the medical graduate students, case method teaching was introduced to the FEM course to improve teaching effect. Methods Combining syllabus, students' majors and our research contents, the teaching cases were built including five cases of medical problems, one case of cell biomechanics and one case of fluid-structure coupling problem. Each case included analysis processes and corresponding videos. Then, teaching cases were applied to teaching processes, under the guidance of the teacher, class discussions were provoked. The teacher summarized the cases. Results Teaching effects were tested through finite element analysis of medical problems selected by students. The results showed that they could independently complete the finite element analysis and explain rationality of parameters and analysis results. Conclusions Teaching practices based on the teaching cases in curriculum related to the finite element analysis showed students improved skills of software operation, understood FEM basic theory and parameters setting, improved the capability to solve medical problems by FEM,which might be helpful for their scientific research and clinical work in further.
