Chinese Modernization and the Cultural View of"Comprehensive Innovation"
Since the encounter and intense collision of Chinese and Western cultures in modern times, how to handle the relationship between Chinese and Western cultures has become a core or focal issue that Chinese in-tellectuals and scholars must face. In response, Chinese thinkers have proposed various solutions, of which the most influential in history and reality are represented by"the theory of Western application in Chinese essence","the theory of comprehensive innovation","the theory of Chinese parochialism","the theory of complete West-ernization","the theory of difference between traditional Chinese culture and modern Western culture","the the-ory of Chinese application in Western essence","the theory of cultural ups and downs like a swinging pendu-lum", and"the theory of the Chinese model". Among those solutions,"the theory of comprehensive innovation"holds more rationality and superiority both in methodology and cultural practice. Since its proposal in the 1930s, the cultural view of"comprehensive innovation"has been continuously inherited and developed, having experi-enced Zhang Shenfu and Zhang Dainian's"three teachings converging into one", Fang Keli's"Western applica-tion in Chinese essence under Marxist soul", and the historical process of its third-phase development. In to-day's comprehensive promotion of Chinese modernization, the cultural view of"comprehensive innovation"un-doubtedly has contemporary value, and should be elevated and developed under"Chinese modernization"as the theme of the times.
