摘要
《孙子兵法》被誉为"百代谈兵之祖",是中国古代军事文化遗产中的璀璨瑰宝,其英译研究具有重要的学术价值和现实意义.通过考察影响力较大的,或前人研究关注不够的19位西方译者与9位中国译者英译该典籍的动机,发现主要有8种:不满意前人译本;译者自身兴趣;探知中国人的思维模式与中国、日本等国的战略思想;国外商业出版公司与大学出版社,以及政府出版机构邀请译者英译;银雀山考古新材料的出现;前辈或导师建议;解决核战争威胁等现实问题的考虑;再现原著丰富含义,提供多种阐释.这些翻译动机的背后既有微观译者个人因素的影响又有宏观社会主流因素的影响.
Abstract
Renowned as"the ancestor of those who discuss military affairs through hundred genera-tions",The Art of War can represent Chinese military thought,and the English translation studies of this classic has academic value and realistic significance.In this study,the author probes into the transla-tion motivation of nineteen western translators and nine Chinese translators who are influential who have been neglected by other researchers,and finds out that there are eight kinds of motivation:dissatisfied with the existing translations;translators'interest;exploring the thinking mode of the Chinese people and the strategic thought of China and Japan;invitation from commercial publishing companies and uni-versity press of the English countries,and from the publishing agencies of the Chinese government;new materials from Yinque Mountain;advice of supervisors;deal with the threat of nuclear war;reveal the in-finite meaning of the original and produce an alternate interpretation.The motivation of the translators has been both influenced by the micro translators'personal factors and the macro social dominant fac-tors.
