Research and Design for Transformation and Improvement of Non-motorized Lanes on Existing Roads in Guangzhou
In recent years,as the urban traffic congestion problem becomes widely recognized and the green travel concept gains the popularity, slow traffic, especially bicycle traffic, has begun to return. How to let the bicycle regain the right of way has become an unavoidable and important issue in the process of bicycle revival. This paper first describes the development and construction course of non-motorized lanes in Guangzhou, and it is pointed out that there are problems such as poor continuity, low refinement, insufficient protection of right of way and so on. Then the design principles and space, type requirements that should be followed for the transformation and improvement of non-motorized lanes are proposed. Based on the right of way allocation theory and with the goal of humanization and refinement,it is proposed that specific design guidelines for remoulding of existing road sections, intersections and bus stops,so as to guide remoulding practice of non-motorized lanes through the redistribution of road space.
