From Thread-Bound Books to Western-Style Books:The Materiality Change of Book Forms in Modern China
Based on the materiality turn in the communication studies,the article focuses on the change of book forms during the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.Based on a comprehensive examination of the study of book forms,and through a historical review of the transition from traditional thread-bound books to modern Western-style books,the article points out that the evolution reflects the trajectory of culture and also reflects the social changes.Interpreting the changes in bookbinding from a material perspective,the article points out that from the perspective of production,the transformation of bookbinding is a part of the modern publishing industry's transformation,influenced by both technology and culture;from the perspective of reception,the transformation of bookbinding is associated with various aspects such as the symbolism of books and the price fluctuations of books,and directly impacts readers'reading experience and reading habits,providing a new research perspective for the modern publishing history and book history.
