Do ASEAN Students in China Boost Bilateral Trade——Based on Panel Data Analysis from 1999-2018
This paper analyzes the structural change of ASEAN international students in China andits impact on bi-lateral trade from 1999 to 2018,and finds that the number of ASEAN international students in China has increased by more than 20 times,among which self-supporting students are the majority of international students in China,mainly from Vietnam,Thailand,Malaysia,Laos and other traditional friendly countries;The Chinese government scholarships focus on supporting academic degree students,with more support for the foreign students from Viet-nam,Thailand,Laos.Secondly,ASEAN foreign students in China have a positive promoting effect on bilateral trade,and the promoting effect of degree students is greater than that of non-degree students.After conducting one and two semesters robustness tests for lag phases,it is found that the longer the lag time is,the more significant the positive promoting effect is.GDP is positively correlated with bilateral trade.China should vigorously develop the education of ASEAN students in China,continuously improve the quality of international students in China,and provide scholarships to students with master's and doctoral degree and advanced continuing education students.At the same time,China should also develop the education of specialized students in China,contiunely optimize the structure of ASEAN students in China,accumulate human resources for future bilateral trade growth,and constantly expand the space for trade growth with ASEAN.
