On YAO Yuanchu's Short Story Creation(1915—1919):Based on the Examination of The Ladies' Journal
As an active explorer of short story innovation in the early Republic of China and one of the "Four Greats of Nanshe",YAO Yuanchu made great contributions to the creation of Nanshe's novels.His creations present a subtle tension between tradition and moder-nity,conservatism and innovation,reflecting both the continuation of traditional female values and the re-examination and re-shaping of female roles.This seemingly contradictory creative orientation reflects the pluralistic and transitional character of social trends in the ear-ly Republic of China.An in-depth analysis of the reasons for YAO Yuanchu's creation in The Ladies' Journal,the characteristics of his works and the perceptions of women he presented will help to reveal the complex attitudes of intellectuals towards women's issues in this period of history and provide new perspectives for the understanding of the interactive relationship between modern Chinese literature and social change.
