An Exploration of Justice:Reading The Lynchers from the Perspective of Ethical Literary Criticism
In John Edgar Wideman's The Lynchers,four African Americans plot the public lynching of a white policeman,and their plan for revenge runs throughout the novel.One of the questions raised in the novel is the multiple connotations of justice:What does it mean for the African American in a white society to uphold justice?Based on ethical literary criticism and Aristotle's theory of justice,this paper,from the perspectives of distributive justice,corrective justice,universal justice and special justice,explores the multiple mean-ings of justice in the novel as well as the ethical problems interwoven with it,so as to reveal the complexity of the path and means of achieving racial justice for the African American.Wideman guides readers to think about the multi-dimensional nature of justice through his novel,which reflects the author's keen foresight and strong sense of social responsibility.
