A Construction Grammar Appoach to the Reformulation Marker "W(a)ng X LI Shu(o)"
"W(a)ng X li shu(o)" is a highly used and unpredictable construction in modern Chinese, especially widely found in spoken language. It can help extend the meaning of the sentences in which it is embedded. This article discusses its components, construction meaning, the relation between two parts before and after the construction, and its evaluation function. The present study finds that there are three types of its meaning-expressiveness, reformulation, and evaluation, and it acts as a reformulation marker illustrating three types of relations between the parts, including general-specific, exceptional-universal, and representational-essential, and has an evaluation function in usage to express positive, negative and neutral attitudes. Although the variant slot "X" significantly contributes to the evaluation of this construction, context plays a crucial role in its meaning and concrete usage.
