Study on the Relation between UAV Characteristic Dimension and Ground Impact Risk Level
UAV operating companies need to know the upper and lower limit of the ground impact risk level of the specific models of medium and large UAVs they operate. However, the existing methods have the deficiencies of requiring many parameters and com-plex formula calculation. In this paper, the functional relationship between accident interval and characteristic dimension for medium and large UAVs in mild and harsh operating environment were established, respectively.Classification of the ground impact risk level by accident interval was refined.A method of using UAV characteristic dimension to quickly obtain its upper and lower limit of the ground impact risk level was proposed. For medium and large UAVs of the same model, the upper and lower limit of the ground im-pact risk level are 3~4 levels apart. This difference strongly disproves that a large UAV characteristic dimension is associated with a high ground impact risk, and indicates that there is much room for UAV ground impact risk adjustment.UAV operating companies should pay special attention to UAV operating environment, and take measures such as optimizing flight path, implementing off-peak operation, and avoiding adverse meteorological conditions to mitigate UAV ground impact risk.
