The Times, founded in 1886,is not only the first Chinese newspaper in modern Tianjin, but also the first commercial newspaper in the northern part of the late Qing Dynasty.Academic circles have always believed that Minghuzi, the editor-in-chief of the Times, was the British missionary Timothy Lee,but his true identity was Cai Xiling,a senior journalist in the late Qing Dynasty.Cai Xiling, with the ambition of serving for the country, worked with Jin Kaili and Lin Lezhi to compile a compilation of Recent Events in Western Countries,he also worked in Shenpao(Shanghai News),and was hired as the editor-in-chief by the Times. When working in the Times,Cai Xiling advocated western learning, introduced new books and advocated reform to replace the old system. His efforts and achievements should be taken into account, and should not be overshadowed by Timothy Lee.
