Study on shape selection of PZT patch for electro mechanical impedance method
Pb-based zirconate titanate(PZT)patch is commonly used sensor in electromechanical impedance(EMI)method.Firstly, the sensibility of PZT patches to the same damage and severity on the same steel plate is compared. In the experiment, circular, square, rectangle, pentagon, and trapezoid patches with the same thickness and similar area are used. Then, the displacement of the main surfaces of the PZT patches of various shapes is analyzed and studied, using finite element software COMSOL.The results show that in the application of EMI methods,PZT patches with the same area, circular, square, and rectangle patches are more sensitive to the damage and severity.Sensibility of rectangle PZT patch has directivity to the damage, and it is more sensitive to damage on its width side.In terms of the shape, the performance difference of the PZT patches used in EMI method mainly depends on the consistency of the displacement in the plane of their main surfaces. The more consistent of the displacement is,the stronger identification ability to damage and its severity.
