Application Value of Ultrasonic Grading of Varicocele in the Assessment of Testicular Function
Objective To explore the application value of ultrasound grading of varicocele(VC)in the assessment of testicular function. Methods A total of 152 patients with VC in Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital from July 2021 to December 2022 were selected as the research objects. The patients were divided into a mild group(n=47),a moderate group(n=51),and a severe group(n=54)according to the severity of their VC.The internal diameter of the spermatic vein, reflux time, and testicular dimensions in the three groups were measured by ultrasound. The testicular volume and atrophy index(AI)were calculated. The age, body mass index(BMI),smoking history, drinking history, testicular dimensions, semen examination, testosterone, and serum follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH)of the three groups were statistically analyzed. And the correlation between different VC ultrasound grades and changes in testicular function was analyzed using multiple independent samples rank test and multivariate Logistic regression. Results Comparison of age and BMI among the 3 groups showed statistically significant differences(P<0.05).Testicular Al,sperm concentration, sperm viability, serum FSH,and testosterone among the 3 groups showed statistically significant differences(P<0.05).With the aggravation of the degree of VC,the abnormal rate of testicular AI and serum FSH tended to increase in all 3 groups. After controlling for BMI,smoking, alcohol consumption and age,the risk of disease in the mild group was lower than that in the severe group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05),while the risk of disease in the severe group was not statistically significant compared with that in the moderate group(P>0.05).Conclusion VC ultrasound grading is greatly correlated with changes in testicular function.Ultrasound grading is one of the reliable indicators for assessing testicular function.
