Cause Analysis and Preliminary Countermeasures for New Vulnerable Section in Taicang Reach of Changjiang Estuary
Local parts of riverbeds in the Changjiang Estuary have seen intense scouring in recent years, resulting in additional vulnerable section reaching the highest warning level extending from Xintaihai ferry dock to Qiyakou in the south branch of Taicang reach.Based on high-precision field measured hydro-topographic data, this paper reveals several critical changes in the riverbed near bank in this newly identified vulnerable section.Such changes include the southward advance of deep channel, the aggravation of steep bank slope, the increasing of erosion rates, and the upward migration of erosion area. The study also identifies several primary causes for this vulnerable section, including the adjustment of upstream river regime, the decrease of sediment discharge from Changjiang River Basin, and changes in the velocity and direction of flow near riverbank.Based on these findings, the paper proposes targeted countermeasures to address these issues.
