Progress and Prospect of Sediment Research in Lancang-Mekong River
In recent years, the significant change of sediment regime in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin greatly affects coastal life, production, ecology, etc.,attracting widespread attention from all fields of the society. This paper summarizes the progress on sediment research in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin from four aspects:sediment sources, sediment amount entering the sea, delta evolution trends, and impact factors of delta changes. The results indicate that sediment in the Mekong River mainly comes from the Lancang River Basin,the"3S"(Se Kong River,Se San River, and Srepok River)Basin, and northern Laos.Sediment supply from main stream and delta of the Mekong River shows a decreasing trend, and the shoreline of Mekong Delta has undergone significant changes due to complex and diverse impact factors. On this basis,we propose prospects on directions that need to be further discussed such as basic data sorting, physical processes of sediment movement, and mechanisms of delta evolution.
