Will Artificial Intelligence Intensify the Wage Gap Based on Education Levels
The new round of technological revolution led by artificial intelligence(AI)is reshaping China's income distribution pat-tern while promoting economic growth.By putting data on industrial robot installations from the International Federation of Robotics(IFR)into the Mincer Wage Equation, the study utilizes the China Labor Dynamics Survey(CLDS)to analyze the theoretical mecha-nism of the impact of AI on the wage gap based on educational levels from three dimensions:skill bias, knowledge intensity, and the capital-labor binary attribute.Empirical tests are conducted further to examine the findings. The research reveals that, firstly, the de-velopment of AI is beneficial for overall wage increases but would further exacerbate the disparity among different educational back-grounds.This conclusion still rings true after conducting various robustness tests.Secondly,AI has a more significant employment creation effect on highly educated labor, leading to imbalanced income shares between high and low-educated labor and exacerbat-ing the wage gap based on education levels.Additionally, highly educated labor within the high-income group is more likely to bene-fit from the employment creation effect of AI.Thirdly, the divergence effect of AI on the wage gap based on different education levels, exhibiting heterogeneity,is more pronounced in the central and western regions, among women and elderly labor force groups. This study provides valuable insights for addressing the imbalanced income distribution structure under the impact of AI.
