Heterogeneous Effects of Housing Ownership on Changes in the Economic Status of Households
Using a quasi-natural experiment where multiple forms of housing ownership exis-ted after the large-scale housing system reforms in urban areas of China in the 1990s,the hetero-geneous effects of housing ownership on changes in the economic status of households are exam-ined in conjunction with the survey data from CFPS in 2010,2012,2014,2016,and 2018.The results show that the acquisition of full housing ownership has a significant negative effect on the changes in the economic status of households, while the effect of the acquisition of partial housing ownership on the changes in the economic status of households is not significant, which may be due to the fact that the house mortgage slave effect of the acquisition of full housing ownership outweighs its wealth effect. Moreover, the negative effect of home ownership acquisition on the economic status of the elderly group is the more significant, while the effect on the youth group is not significant. In addition, housing property rights acquisition is detrimental to the economic status advancement of the low education group, but the effect on the economic status change of the high education group is not significant.
