Effect of Wood Flour Esterification on Properties of Wood Plastic Composites
Birch wood powder was treated in acetic anhydride solution, and birch wood powder composites incorporated with high density polyethylene (HDPE) were prepared by hot-pressing technology.Effects of reaction conditions on the mechanical properties of the composites were determined. The transformations of functional groups in wood fibers were analyzed by FTIR and their anatomical properties were investigated using electronic microscope and micrograph analysis system of computer. The morphologies of fracture surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).The optimum chemical reaction conditions of the wood flour in the acetic anhydride solution have been obtained. The correlation with the extent of esterification reaction and the mechanical strength of the wood plastic composites was analyzed. The results show that the surface hydrophobicity of the wood fibers could be improved effectively and their configuration and micro-morphology could be changed by controlling the extent of esterification in order to increase the interfacial bonding strength of the wood plastic composites. After the birch wood powder treated by acetic anhydride solution, the polarity of the wood fibers was reduced due to the hydroxyl groups partly replaced by the acetyl groups and the length and wall thickness of wood fibers became increasing. Moreover, the surface of the wood fibers treated became smoother and the wood plastic composites became denser.
