Regional polycentric structure, industrial chain supply chain and export quality upgrading
Under the new dual circulation development paradigm, the evolution of domestic urban size systems and their impact on China's participation in international trade competition is a critical topic worth in-depth exploring.Using nighttime light data, this study constructs a regional polycentric structure index and examines the impact of regional polycentric structures on the quality of firms'export products based on data from A-share listed companies and customs records from 2000 to 2016.The findings indicate that re-gional polycentric structures significantly promote the upgrading of export product quality. This conclusion remains robust after conducting tests with altered regional spatial scopes, different samples, and mitigations for endogeneity issues.Heterogeneity analysis shows that the positive effect of regional polycentric structures on export product quality is more pronounced in cities with greater distances between them, higher market accessibility, firms with more subsidiaries, and those with lower upstreamness in the export chain.Mecha-nism testing reveals that regional polycentric structures enhance the completeness and coordination of indus-trial chains and improve supply chain stability, thereby driving to improve the quality of export products. The moderating effect analysis indicates that deepened functional division between central and peripheral cit-ies amplifies the export product quality upgrading effect brought about by the polycentric development mod-el.Furthermore,extended analysis finds that the positive influence of regional polycentric structures on ex-port product quality mainly manifests through improving the reallocation effects of surviving firms and the effects of exiting firms.
