Research on the bilateral trade effects of China's overseas economic and trade cooperation zone construction
Based on the panel data of China's import and export trade from 1998 to 2020,this re-search results show that the number of overseas economic and trade cooperation zones(OETCZs)has sig-nificantly expanded the scale of China's import and export trade with host countries. The construction of OETCZs promotes the growth of bilateral trade mainly through two possible mechanisms:improving the in-frastructure of host countries and enhancing the convenience of doing business. In host countries with rela-tively low per capita GDP and insufficient labor force,as well as in the neighboring"Belt and Road"coun-tries,the effect of the construction of OETCZs on bilateral trade is more obvious, and the construction of R&D,trade and logistics, and agricultural industry-type OETCZs have a more significant promotion effect on bilateral trade. The findings of the study provide policy insights for China to move from international co-operation in production capacity to the construction of regional value chains by using OETCZs as platform.
