Research on Impacts of the Soil Cavity on the Stress of Masonry Drainage Arch Culverts
As more and more drainage arch culverts are put into use, defects in the urban drainage arch culvert become a major concern. This paper selected one of the defects, soil cavity, which has a great impact on the stress of a masonry drainage arch culvert as the research object.Based on the Hongqi Canal test section project in Changsha City, this paper performed numerical simulations of the locations and sizes of soil cavities in the side wall of the arch culvert and behind the arch ring, thereby yielding the influence law of soil cavities on the stress of an arch culvert structure. The results showed that cavities exerting the most negative impacts on the stress are the unilateral and bilateral ones at the arch toe, followed by unilateral and bilateral cavities at the arch waist, unilateral and bilateral cavities at the bottom of side walls have little effect on the stress, and cavities in the vault would reduce the stress of the arch culvert.Given an analysis of the sizes of cavities at the single and double sides of the arch toe,it's known that the dimensions in the plane of the cavities are divided into height and width, and the width has a greater influence on the arch culvert structure than the height; When the width is less than 1.0h,the structural force of the arch culvert changes little;and when the width goes beyond 1.0h,the maximum tensile stress of the arch culvert structure transfers from the arch top to the arch toe,so cavities are prone to cause damage at the arch toe,and this should be paid attention to.
