A Review of Research on Characteristic Villages and Architecture of the Qiang Ethnic Group in China
Distinctive villages of the Qiang ethnic group are characterized by unique architecture and culture, yet they face issues such as decline and hollowing out amidst urbanization. With the advancement of rural revitalization strategies, numerous scholars have conducted extensive research on these villages, and a review and summary of this research is conducive to a comprehensive understanding of the current research landscape and the identification of future research directions. This paper organizes existing research both vertically through historical perspectives and horizontally through thematic aspects.Vertical research spans three stages:sporadic records in history, systematic research beginning in 1997,and a surge in research since 2008.The research themes primarily encompass fundamental studies on Qiang villages, fundamental studies on Qiang architecture, research on watchtowers and decorations, reflections on the conservation of Qiang villages and architecture, studies on post-earthquake reconstruction, and interdisciplinary perspectives on Qiang culture, rural tourism, and more. The study finds that current research on Qiang villages is diverse in perspective, encompassing not only ethnology and architectural anthropology but also tourism, culture, society, and other angles. It transcends descriptive research and includes innovative research.Rather than solely focusing on static physical spaces,it also attends to their development, change, protection, and renewal, particularly protection in the aftermath of earthquakes.Research has shifted from subjective cognition to objective and rational analysis guided by various theories.Future research directions include:establishing archives of distinctive villages leveraging digital technologies, protection and planning design, focusing on the loss of traditional craftsmanship and resident participation,problem-oriented in-depth local research, and theoretical construction and innovative research.
