Research on Zhuge Liang's "Reply to Li Yan's Book "
Beitang Shuchao contains a letter from Zhuge Liang's "Reply to Li Yan's Book" stating that "Wu shou ci ba shi wan hu,jin xu cai wu yu,qie wu fu fu." There is controversy in the academic community regarding the authenticity of the record of "Ba shi wan hu" and the understanding that "Qie wu fu fu". According to the analysis of the historical background and literature of the letter writing,"Ba shi wan hu" should be mistaken for "Ba qian hu". "Qie" should specifically refer to a concubine,"Fu" refers to excess, and " Qie wu fu fu" means that (Zhuge Liang's) concubine does not have surplus clothing. At the same time, due to the close writing time between the book and Zhuge Liang's "Reply to Li Yan's book (advise him to accept Jiu xi) ",and the certain correlation between the content of the two letters, they may be the same letter, both written in the seventh year of Jian Xing in the Shu Han Dynasty (229).
