Research on the New Epitaph of the Marriage and Officials of Cui Xuantai's Families Coming from Qinghe Xiaofang in Tang Dynasty
The Cui Clan of Qinghe Xiaofang was a high-ranking branch of aristocratic families in Tang Dynasty, but the Cui Xuantai families, even as one of the three major families in this branch, performed too plainly, lacking prime ministers and three nobles,as well as well-known cultural elites. The marriage partners of the Cui Xuantai families during the Tang Dynasty did not fall outside the Four Surnames nobility in Shandong Province, especially the intermarriage with the Lu Clan from Fanyang was the most complicated. The marriages with the Li Clan from Zhaojun has all occurred since the mid Tang Dynasty, and the number of it was relatively rare. From the mid to late Tang Dynasty, prime ministers Pei Du,Li Guyan,Zheng Qin,and the sons of famous officials such as Lu Congyuan,Pei Shiyan, and Lu Hongxuan,as well as famous officials Lu Shimei and the grandson of prime minister Zheng Su,had all got married with their families. However, there were only two cases of male marriage partners in the family being daughters of important officials, namely Pei Jun and Li Dang, which were typical representatives of the Tang Dynasty's advocation on marriage. The Cui Xuantai families did not appear prime minister or three counsellors of state in the Tang Dynasty, but they have been crowned one after another throughout history. Before the mid Tang Dynasty, the rate of entering the officialdom was almost 100%,but the number of populace in the late Tang Dynasty suddenly increased, showing signs of decline in the families. The long-standing prosperity of the Cui Xuantai families is closely related to their inheritance of Confucian classics,as well as the support of their relatives and influential officials.Their descendants had already diverged before the Guangming Rebellion, and the success of the imperial examination became the key to their fate.
