The Documentation of the Shu Road in Guangyuan's Local Chronicles and Its Cultural Genealogy
The Shu Road, historically a crucial corridor linking the regions of Ba and Shu with the Central Plains, fulfilled different functions over time.Consequently, its depiction in the local chronicles of Guangyuan varied in style and content across different historical periods, reflecting its evolving significance.During the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,Guangyuan's local chronicles primarily characterized the Shu Road as a plank road, highlighting aspects such as its general outline, geographical features, postal routes and bridges, road maintenance, historical shifts, and literary inscriptions.Since the 1980s,however,newly compiled local chronicles in the Guangyuan region have reconceptualized the Shu Road as cultural heritage. These chronicles delve into the underlying historical dynamics of its transformations, reframe collective memory to reinforce the road's temporal continuity and spatial identity, and recontextualize its value to broaden its functional scope and influence. This shift in perspective offers new insights into the preservation and transmission of Shu Road culture.
