Abstract
In modern cities with highly developed infrastructure, the connections between people are wilting. How to play the role of cities in bridging the gap between people due to cultural and information differences is an important issue in urban development, and physical cultural spaces provide an opportunity for this purpose. In this paper,we take brick-and-mortar bookstores as an example and model the variation of readers'utility using spatial economics theory to obtain the source of spatial agglomeration.By analyzing data from brick-and-mortar bookstores in Shanghai, this paper examines the locational advantage and scale effect of brick-and-mortar bookstores, finding that locational conditions and diversified services alone do not significantly increase readers'utility, while spatial agglomeration of shared cultural symbols significantly reduces the share of discontent among readers and imposes a scale effect to facilitate communication and interaction among heterogeneous readers.
