Understanding Urban Spatial Structure of Shanghai Central City Based on Mobile Phone Data
This paper presents an approach of understanding urban spatial structure by using mobile phone positioning data and the Shanghai central city is used as a case for illustrating the approach.Firstly, based on base station location data and mobile phone signal data, the number of users connecting to each base station is summed and density maps of mobile phone users are generated by using Kernel density analysis. We calculate multi-day average user density at 10:00 and 23:00 hours for week days and at 15:00 and 23:00 hours for weekend for Shanghai central city. Then, spatial cluster and density at 10:00 hour in workdays and at 15:00 hour at weekend are classified.Based on such analysis,we identify the ranks and functions of public centers in the Shanghai central city.Lastly,we iden tify residential areas, employment areas and leisure areas in the Shanghai central city and measure the degree of three functions and their mixes by comparing the ratio of day and night user density and user density at night-time for weekdays and weekend.
