Advancement in Understanding the City Image Based on Image and Spatio-temporal Data:Limitations,Expansion, and Applications
The image of the city is a foundational theory for analyzing urban spatial structure within urban design. However, with economic and social development and advancements in technological tools, the limitations of this theory in practice have become increasingly prominent. These limitations mainly manifests in terms of spa-tial scale, urban style, and static thinking in planning practice. To address the limita-tions of this theory, this study takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining insights from urban and rural planning and behavioral geography.Using image perception data and spatiotemporal location data, the paper analyzes urban images at the city scale across three dimensions:time series, spatial distribution, and behavioral pat-terns.It elaborates on the new findings of urban image from six aspects:graphic fea-tures,crowd effects, element relationships, spatial scales, theoretical foundations, and research methods. It highlights the structural characteristics, dynamic characteristics, and new elements of urban image. The study brings innovations to urban image clas-sification and grading methods from small to big data, from static to dynamic map-ping,and from local areas to entire cities, expanding the scope and connotation of urban image theory.
